Description

A good quality antique sterling silver tankard with domed lid and straight tapering form with coopered rings to the body. Uninscribed. Large size. Shows traces of the orginal hand hammered finish. Contains 1000 ml. Weight 891 grams, Height 19.2 cms (to top of thumbpiece). Spread 17cms. Diameter of top 11.5 cms, base 13 cms. English silver hallmarks for London 1758. Maker Benjamin Cartwright.

This tankard is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Fully marked both inside lid and on the body next to the handle. Makers mark on the handle. Some slight discoloration to the body. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Recorded as a working goldsmith and toyman at the Pearl and Crown, Bartholomew Close, West Smithfield until 1774. His son, Benjamin Cartwright II, no record of apprenticeship or freedom but was presumably apprenticed to his father. 1st mark as largeworker 1754. 2nd mark 1756. 3rd mark 1770. ceship or freedom, probably free of the Blacksmiths Company. 1st mark as smallworker 1732. 2nd mark as largeworker 1739. 3rd mark 1748, 4th mark 1757. Recorded as a working goldsmith and toyman at the Pearl and Crown, Bartholomew Close, West Smithfield until 1774.
