A good quality antique sterling silver tankard with domed lid and straight tapering form with coopered rings to the body. The scroll handle has a decorative thumb piece and applied strap work. Contains 1000 ml. Weight 866 grams, 27.8 troy ounces. Height 19 cms. Diameter of lid 11.5 cms, base 13 cms. London 1758. Maker William Shaw and William Priest.


This tankard is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Good set of clear and matching English silver hallmarks inside lid and on the body next to the handle, handle unmarked. Colour good. The shape of the base is not quite "round". Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: William Shaw And William Priest

William Shaw II, apprenticed to John Swift 1736, free 1748. First mark entered as largeworker 1749. Second and third marks, in partnership with William Priest, 1749 and 1759. William Priest (or Preist), apprenticed to Richard Gurney 1740, free 1749. First and second marks entered as largeworker in partnership with William Shaw in 1749 and 1759. Third mark with his brother James Priest in 1764; they worked together until 1773. The Shaw & Priest partnership specialized in making good quality holloware coffee pots, tankards and some salvers.
