A handsome antique silver tankard of large size and good weight. Plain baluster form with a shaped scroll handle. Bright colour. Uninscribed.

Contains 670 ml, over 1 imperial pint.

Weight 365 grams, 11.7 troy ounces.

Height 12.2cm. Spread 13cm. Diameter 8.7cm.

Literature. The term “mug” is traditionally used for a single-handed, lidless drinking vessel. They are nearly all of either pint or half pint capacity. Antique silver mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680Condition. The silver mug is in very good condition. Good colour. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

The silver mug is in very good condition. Good weight. Stamped underneath with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks. There is a small mark inside where the handle joins the body and a couple of tiny dinks. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: John Edwards II

John Edwards II, London silversmith, apprenticed to Thomas Pritchard of the Grocers Company in 1708 for 7 years. Freedom 1723. 2 marks, sterling and New Standard, entered as largeworker in 1723, in partnership with George Pitches. 3rd and 4th marks alone 1724. 5th mark 1739. 6th mark 1753, possibly of his son. Grimwade describes Edwards’ work as having remarkable quality of execution. His works include the large rococo inkstand of 1744 and an outstanding tureen with dolphin handles and crab finial of 1737 (formerly in the Hurst collection). (formerly in the Butlin collection) He is likely to be the Edwards entered in the Jewel House records as subordinate Goldsmith to King
