A good pair of antique sterling silver candle holders with shell corners and detachable sconces. Very attractive design and heavy cast silver. Each has a hand engraved crest, both to one corner of the base and also to the front centre of the base.

Weight 854 grams, 27.4 troy ounces.
Height 20 cm. Base 10.7 x 10.7 cm.
London 1762.
Maker John Hyatt and Charles Semore.
Sterling silver.

Marks. Both sticks are stamped underneath the base with a matching set of English silver hallmarks, the sconces with the lion mark, the nozzles with lion and maker’s mark. 1 stick has a blob of silver showing underneath; this is not a repair, it simply occurred during the casting process and has caused the maker’s mark to be badly struck.

Literature: Cast candlesticks started to appear circa 1685, these are much heavier in weight and capable of withstanding greater wear. The first loaded candlesticks appeared circa 1765 and are made of sheet, and not cast.

These lovely candlesticks are in very condition. There is a blob of silver on the underside of one stick - see the note on marks above.
