Description

A very attractive pair of antique silver tapersticks of substantial size and heavy weight. Cast silver. This unusual pair is particularly decorative having shaped, domed bases, gadroon edges and shell corners.

Total weight 455 grams, 14.6 troy ounces.
Height 16cm. Base diameter 8.8cm.
London 1765.
Maker Ebenezer Coker, known for his candlesticks.
Sterling silver.

Marks. Stamped underneath on the centre of each edge with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks.

Literature. Tapersticks, averaging about 5 inches high are miniature table candlesticks used to hold a wax taper. They are rarer than candlesticks and very few exist prior to the Queen Anne period. They usually appear in singles and pairs of tapersticks command a premium price.

Condition

In very good condition. Excellent patina.

Ebenezer Coker, apprenticed to Joseph Smith 1728, free 1740. First mark entered 1738, 2nd mark 1739, 3rd mark 1745, 4th mark 1751, 5th mark circa 1758. Another mark was entered in partnership with Thomas Hannam 1759. Specialist candlestick and salver maker.
