A handsome antique sterling silver basket with swing handle. Excellent quality and weight. With the ribbed body and shell and gadroon borders typical of the period. Weight 1299 grams, 41.7 troy ounces. Height 25cm. Length 32cm. Width 26.5cm. London 1814. By Samuel Herbert.
Condition
Very good condition with no damage. Deep crisp embossed decoration. Stamped with a full and clear set of English silver hallmarks, the body with duty mark and lion. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: Solomon Hougham
Solomon Hougham, London silversmith, free by redemption 1786, but already working since Henry, son of Henry Hougham, was apprenticed to him in 1789. Elected to livery 1791. Partner with Charles Hougham from 1790. 1st mark entered as plateworker 1793. 2nd mark (2 sizes) 1793. 3rd mark (2 sizes) 1812. 4th mark with Solomon Royes and John East Dix 1817, dissolved by 1818. Hougham died circa 1820. ,
