Description

A good antique sterling silver tankard with domed hinged lid. Balaster design with concentric rim and flared base. Simple curved handle with an ornamental thumbpiece and applied strapwork having the initial ‘W’ hand engraved below. Uninscribed. Contains 850ml. Weight 713 grams, 22.9 troy ounces. Height 19.5 cms to top of thumbpiece. Spread 17 cms. Diameter of top 10 cms, base 11.25 cms. London 1763. Maker William Cripps.

This tankard is in very good condition. Good colour. Good clear marks inside lid and underneath the body, handle unmarked. A few minor surface dinks to the body. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

William Cripps, apprenticed to David Willaume II, free 1738. 1st mark as largeworker 1743. 2nd mark 1746. 3rd mark 1751. Died circa 1767. Arthur Grimwade describes Cripps as an accomplished craftsman and versatile exponent of the rococo style who enjoyed considerable clientele.
