Description
A good quality antique sterling silver salver with a shaped bead border and ball and claw feet. The centre has a large hand engraved coat of arms within a finely executed cartouche. Weight 904 grams, 29 troy ounces. Diameter 30cm. Height 48cm. London 1774. Maker probably John Carter II.
Condition
This silver tray is in very good condition. The silver marks are well stamped and clear. The engraving still has good definition. There is 1 small border repair which is hard to see. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
Maker Information
Maker: John Carter II
John Carter, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark entered 1776 although records show that he was already supplying candlesticks to Parker & Wakelin by 1769. 2nd mark entered 1776 , the same day as the mark of Richard Carter and Robert Makepiece was entered at the same address. Although recorded as both goldsmith and manufacturer of large plate Carters main specialisation was on candlesticks and salvers.
