Description

A substantial pair of antique silver tureens with matching covers having a plain background design, gadroon borders, and amazing applied decoration. The body with a band of classical face masks and coiling rope handles. The lids with artichoke finials rising from an arrangement of cast vegetables. There is a hand engraved crest, for the Dillon family, to the front of the lid and tureen. The interior is lightly gilded.

Weight 3371 grams, 108 troy ounces.
Height 24.1cm (to top of finial). Spread across handles 24.1cm. Diameter 15cm.

Maker William Fountain.
Sterling silver.

Very large unusual size. Useful for serving vegetables or large covered sauce containers.

Marks. Stamped on the finial, edge of lid, rim of base with a matching set of English silver hallmarks.

Crest. The crest is that of Dillon, possibly of one of the Viscounts Dillon. In 1805 Charles Dillon, 12th Viscount Dillon (1745–1813) was still alive and his son and heir apparent, Henry Augustus Dillon, later 13th Viscount Dillon (1777–1832) hadn’t yet married. The title is still extant and is currently held by Henry Benedict Charles Dillon, 22nd Viscount Dillon (b. 1973). His son and heir apparent is Hon. Francis Charles Robert Dillon (b. 2013)

Condition

The tureens are in very good condition. with moderate signs of wear commensurate with age.

William Fountain, London silversmith, apprenticed to Fendall Rushworth of Goldsmith's Hall 1777. Turned over the same day by consent to Daniel Smith of Merchant Taylor. Free, 2 February 1785. Mark entered as plateworker, in partnership with Daniel Pontifex, 29 July 1791. Second mark alone, 1 September 1794. Third mark 30 June 1798. Fourth mark, 5 February 1821.
