Description

A large and imposing sterling silver tureen with matching cover. Excellent size for serving soup, casseroles and vegetables. Oval bellied shape with twin side handles, stunningly shaped feet and cast silver lid handle. Hand engraved to the front is a large armorial with the matching elephant crest to the lid. Heavy gauge silver. Good colour.

Marks. Stamped underneath the body and on the top of the lid with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

Literature. Antique Silver Tureens with side carrying handles were introduced during the reign of George II. The lid /cover helped to keep the contents warm. They are generally oval shaped, although they can be round or rectangular. Some have detachable liners and/or matching stands.

This large serving tureen is in very good condition. Crisp engraving.

Samuel Davenport, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark 1786. 2nd mark, in partnership with Edward Davenport 1809. His son Samuel was apprenticed to William Seaman 1809. Sarah Davenport, incuse mark as smallworker 1813, possibly his widow.
