Marks. Stamped underneath the body, stand and lid with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks.

Arms. These are the arms of Robert Lovell Gwatkin (1757-1843), who must have been related but who married Theophila Palmer, a niece of Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA

Literature. Antique Silver Tureens with side carrying handles were introduced during the reign of George II. The lid/cover helped to keep the contents warm. They are generally oval shaped, although they can be round or rectangular. Some have detachable liners and/or matching stands.

Condition

The tureen, lid and stand are all in very good condition, well fitting, and fully functional. Crisp engraving. Moderate signs of wear compatible with their age.
