Description

A large and impressive Scottish silver tureen with matching cover. Excellent size for serving soup, casseroles and vegetables. Attractive oval bellied shape with twin side handles, stunningly shaped feet and cast silver lid handle. Hand engraved to the front is a large armorial with crest and motto, all within a decorative expansive cartouche. Heavy gauge silver. Good colour. There is a large presentation inscription to the reverse side.

Marks. Stamped underneath the body and on the edge of the lid with a full set of Scottish silver hallmarks. All matching.

Arms. For the family of Hood. The motto “Ventis secundis” (By favourable winds) is probably naval.

Literature. Antique Silver Tureens with side carrying handles were introduced during the reign of George II. The lid /cover helped to keep the contents warm. They are generally oval shaped, although they can be round or rectangular. Some have detachable liners and/or matching stands.

Inscription. “Presented by the Congregation of Grey Friars Church – Robert Hood Esquire – as a tribute of their esteem of his private worth as a Member of the Church, of his arduous, faithful, and important services as their Treasurer, gratuitously rendered for the period of 34 Years. Glasgow 1836”

This stunning tureen is in very good condition. The engravings are sharp. The lid fits well. All fully matching and functional.
Minor signs of wear compatible with age.
