A fine antique sterling silver wine jug in the elegant classical style typical of this well regarded maker. Excellent quality and weight. With a tall shapely form on a pedestal foot and curved wooden handle with discreetly decorated end mounts. The body is half fluted below a central reeded band. To the front there is a hand engraved coat of arms with the motto below “Vis Unita Fortior” – “United Strength is Stronger”. On the lid there is a hand engraved crest. Contains 1300 ml. Weight 1036 grams, 33.3 troy ounces. Height 33 cms (top of handle). Spread 16.2 cms. London 1788. Maker John Scofield.

This beautiful silver wine jug is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The engraved crest is sharp. With a full set of English hallmarks underneath the body, a lion sterling silver mark and makers mark inside the lid. Good colour. The wooden handle has a few minor flaws and shows a faint glue line just underneath the thumb piece. This ewer is fully functional; the handle is tight and secure, the pot has been water tested and does not leak, the hinge is tight and works well. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: John Scofield

John Scofield (or Schofield), highly prominent late 18th century London silversmith. No record of apprenticeship of freedom. 1st mark entered as plateworker in 1776 with Robert Jones. 2nd mark alone 1778. 3rd mark 1787. Well known for his impeccable craftsmanship and elegant restrained taste. His candlesticks and candelabra are highly prized.
