A handsome antique sterling silver wine label of plain rectangular form with gadroon border and engraved “HOCK”. Weight 7 grams. Length 4.5 cms. Width 1.3 cms. Makers mark only for James Phipps I. Circa 1772-83.
Condition
This silver wine label is in good condition with no damage or restoration. Makers mark only for James Phipps I, London. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: James Phipps I
James Phipps I, London silver maker, apprenticed to William Pinnell 1741, turned over to Robert Collier, clockmaker. Free 1749. 1st mark entered in partnership with William Bond 1754. 2nd mark as smallworker 1767. 3rd mark 1773. Report List 1773, Livery 1781. Also worked in partnership with son Thomas as James & Thomas Phipps, no mark entered, dissolved 1783. Died circa 1800. Thomas Phipps son of James Phipps I. James Phipps II grandson of James Phipps I.
