An antique silver model of a marriage cup modelled as a bearded gentleman with outstretched arms holding a cup that swivels. His richly decorated jacket and waistcoat sit over a long skirt which is the inverted drinking cup. Excellent quality and good weight. Parcel gilt. Weight 483 grams, 15.5 troy ounces. Height 31.5 cm. Stamped on the bottom of the skirt with German silver marks. Circa 1890.

Literature: Wager cups. The idea is to drink the contents of the large cup (the lady’s skirt) without spilling the drink inside the small cup. These highly collectible silver double drinking vessels are also known as marriage cups. The bride would drink from the small cup, the groom from the large cup.

This novelty cup is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Fully functional. Stamped on the bottom rim of the large cup with the German silver marks crown, moon and 800 silver grade. Both cups have a duty mark. The small cup has the original gilt – exterior a bit worn. The large cup has original interior gilding and gilt banding. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
