Description

A superb French vari colour gold snuff box (or bonbonniere) of circular form with detachable pull off cover. Large size and heavy gauge. The cover, sides and base have concentric panels, stamped at intervals with pellets, within bands of line engraving and rope twist. The execution is excellent especially the detailed matted background.

Vari colour gold. 18 carat (75% purity).

Marks. Marked, Paris 1784/1785, with the second charge and decharge marks of Henri Clavel 1782-1789, the flange later struck 750.

Provenance. Sold in Christie’s Auction, London on 2^nd December 2015. Price realised £6,875. Similar works by Delaunay are on display in the Louvre Museum, Paris, Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Fine Arts Museum, San Francisco.

In very good condition with excellent sharp detail.

Maker: Nicolas Choconain-Delaunay

Nicolas Choconain-Delaunay became master in 1775 following an apprenticeship with Jean-Bernard Sauvage, sponsored by Jean-Baptiste Choconain-Delaunay, a marchand mercier and apparently a close relative. He was working on the pont au Change until 1787 and then in the rue des Fourreurs and rue des Ours until 1793.
