An elegant set of antique sterling silver plates with plain styling and gadroon borders. Engraved to each top rim there is a superb coat of arms to one side and a cross arrows crest (crowned) to the other side. Terrific quality. They are numbered on the underside (originally a very large set). There is an inscription on the underside of two of the plates. Total weight 3031 grams, 97.4 troy ounces. Diameter 25 cms. London 1774. Maker John Carter.
Literature: Each plate in the original larger set would have been numbered in numerical sequence. These 6 plates are numbered in random sequence. See below the individual numbers and scratch weights:
55 – scratch weight 16-19
67 – scratch weight 17-3.5
72 – scratch weight 17-5.5
71 – scratch weight 17-10
52 – scratch weight 16-19.5
35 – scratch weight 16-13
This set of antique silver plates are in very good condition. Each bears a matching hand engraved crest and armorial, excellent quality and still crisp. Each has a full set of clear and matching English silver hallmarks. The knife marks have not been polished out and there are no depressions in the centre from erasures. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

John Carter, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark entered 1776 although records show that he was already supplying candlesticks to Parker & Wakelin by 1769. 2nd mark entered 1776 , the same day as the mark of Richard Carter and Robert Makepiece was entered at the same address. Although recorded as both goldsmith and manufacturer of large plate Carters main specialisation was on candlesticks and salvers.
