A stunning set of 12 antique sterling silver plates of plain design and shaped gadroon border. Excellent quality. Each with a large armorial hand engraved to the rim with the motto “Credens Adjuvor” and crown above.
Total weight 6683 grams, 214.8 troy ounces.

Marks. Stamped on the reverse with a full and matching set of English silver hallmarks. All same maker.
Literature. Dinner plates were usually made in dozens and larger quantities and often came as part of a suite of dishes including soup plates, oval serving plates and mazerines. These dishes very often came from grand houses and have finely executed coats of arms.
Condition
All in very good condition. The central surfaces show some light scratching commensurate with age and use.

George Methuen, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark as largeworker 1743. Somewhat an elusive figure, Grimwade describes his work as of high standard and finish, his main output being salvers, dinner plates and dishes.
