Marks. Stamped underneath 4 times with the maker’s mark “WG”, probably for William Gamble – see Jackson’s “Gold & Silver Marks of Great Britain” and David Mitchell’s “Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London”. This mark was registered in 1682 and superseded by Gamble’s Britannia mark in 1697. The base is also engraved with owner’s initials “E*E”.

Literature. Antique Silver Beakers date back to the early 1600s in Europe. They have remained popular up until the present day and are generally of a simple flared form. Sometimes double beakers are found which fit together in the shape of a barrel. The “Camp Canteen”, dating from the late 17th century onwards, is a travelling set consisting of a beaker fitted inside with cutlery, condiments and possibly a corkscrew.

Condition

The beaker is in very good condition with minor wear consistent with age. Excellent colour. It has been tested for water retention and does not leak.
