Description

A superb 17^th century antique silver cup of tapering form decorated with an exuberant floral design typical of the second half of the 1600’s. Prick engraved “1691” below the rim. An attractive feature is the domed leather presentation casket (circa 1780), the swivel hooks made of silver, the underside covered in marbled paper.

Marks. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks. The maker’s distinctive mark “duck within a circle of dots” is faintly stamped but very visible.

This lovely beaker is in very good condition with just the minor wear you’d expect with age. There is an excess of silver solder underneath which is in the original manufacture and typical of beakers of this period. This beaker has been water tested and does not leak.
The domed leather carrying case is in very good condition with minor wear.

Maker: John Duck

John Duck, apprenticed to Roger Stevens in 1669, free 1677. Duck married Hannah Stevens (daughter of Roger Steven’s widow Katharine) in 1678. Livery 1687. Deputy assayer 1695, a full time appointment and Duck ceased trading as plateworker. During his working career 1680-1696 Duck bound 6 apprentices. His work was mainly producing household plate (hollowware), such as beakers, porringers, tankards and flagons. His distinctive mark was a duck in a dotted circle.
