Matthew Linwood

Matthew Linwood I, Birmingham silversmith, registered 3 marks between 1773 and 1801. He also produced Sheffield plate from premises in Edmund St. His son Matthew Linwood (1756-1826) was a notable maker of silver boxes and was made Guardian of the Birmingham assay office in 1811. Matthew Linwood II’s son Matthew Linwood III (1783-1847) entered partnership with his father and their mark was registered in 1813.

    Of sporting interest – hare coursing. A charming antique sterling silver box with a hinged lid. Plain design with a hand engraved sporting scene on the lid and a geometric design on the base. Original gilt interior. Weight 66 grams, 2.1 troy ounces. Height 1.5 cms. Top measures 7.2 x 4.2 cms. Birmingham 1809. Maker Matthew Linwood.

The elaborate bacchanalian scene portrays two cherubs holding flagons of wine surrounded by grape and vine leaf decoration and a face mask below. Engraved “CLARET” to the scroll centre. Weight 18 grams. Measures 6.3 x 3.7 cm. Birmingham 1807. Maker Matthew Linwood. Sterling silver.
