Antique Newcastle provincial silver. A rare antique sterling silver tea caddy box of plain oval form, the fixed carrying handle having a reed and acanthus decoration. Lovely classic style. The unusual double opening lid has an inset hinge and there is a lock to either side (no key). The tea box has borders of crisp hand engraving bright cut dots, scrolls and foliage; both ends with an empty foliate cartouche. Weight 649 grams, 20.8 troy ounces. Height 11 cms, 19 cms including handle. Length 16.5 cms. Width 10.5 cms. Newcastle 1798. Maker John Langlands.

A handsome George III knife box with tooled leather covering and brass mounts. Fitted with a full and matching set of continental solid silver cutlery, the knives and forks with cannon handles. The set comprises 6 knives with steel blades, 6 forks with steel two prong tines, and 6 solid silver spoons. Each with a hand engraved crown over a monogram. A very usable set. Marked “13” and with makers initials “IK”. Probably German, circa 1800.

The top is decorated in the traditional silver and black niello with two ladies listening to a young man playing a mandolin and, in the background, on gilt stippled ground with leaf borders. The base is equally beautiful with a lady playing the harpsichord, the listener sitting in an armchair. The interior has the original gilding. Weight 55 grams, 1.7 troy ounces.
