Description

A handsome antique silver chalice of plain tapering form with an embossed band of flowers and leaves to the body and foot. Light gilding to the interior bowl. To the front there is a large hand engraved armorial with the motto “Vulneratus Sed Non Victus”.

Marks. Stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks. Makers mark indistinct.

Armorial. These are the arms, crest and motto of Bowman, probably for a family member of John Bowman, (landowner in the 1881 census) born 1822 at Cambridge Heath, Middlesex and later of Rusthall Lodge, Speldhurst, Nr. Tunbridge Wells, Kent. In 1899, John’s son Alfred John, a barrister born 1858 in Surbiton, Surrey, petitioned for arms for himself, his descendants and for the descendants of his late father. Motto: Vulneratus Sed Non Victus (Wounded but not Conquered)
