Description

A large antique silver toilet mirror of rectangular form with a traditional gadroon border and smart, clean lines. Excellent size. Would look amazing as a wall mirror. The reverse side has wall hanging hooks and also the wooden easel stand for use as a dressing mirror.

This elegant furnishing item is full of charm and antiquity. We particularly like the three little wing nuts on the corners which assemble the mirror together.

Marks. Stamped on all four sides with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks. Some marks are bit rubbed but readable.

Literature. Antique silver mirrors were comparatively rare prior to the late 19th century. The first examples were usually easel mirrors, made to go with a full dressing toilet set, although the smaller examples were perhaps intended to be hung on the wall.

Presentation. There is a presentation plaque on the reverse side “EDWARD BARING – from Leopold Agar Ellis, John Bidwell, Bingham Mildmay, Philip Currie – April 1864”. Edward “Ned” Baring (1828-1892), of Baring Brothers & Co, became a partner of the family banking firm in 1856 and later the 1^st Baron Revelstoke.
