    8654 Antique Silver Knights on Horse Back

    A fantastic pair of antique German silver table ornaments in the form of large model knights in armour, each astride a galloping horse. Gilded silver (slightly worn) with jewelled beads. The knights have carved bakalite faces and helmets with hinged visors which can be opened and closed; in the right hand they each hold a jousting pole, or lance, and in the left they clasp the horse’s reins. The models are very intricate with many separate pieces assembled together. The bases have a naturalist finish. Although similar in size and stance, these models have slight differences. One horse carries a plume on the crest of its head whereas the other sports a bird figure on the head. Weight 1405 and 1411 grams, total weight 2816 grams, 90.5 troy ounces. Height 25 and 25.5cm. Spread 20cm excluding the lance. Base 16 x 8cm. Maker Johann S Kurz. Hanau, Germany. Circa 1880.

    An excellent quality antique silver box in the form of a recumbent lion, the famous Lion of Lucerne. The box opens from underneath with a sliding cover and has the inscription “HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI” (To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss). Weight 204 grams, 6.5 troy ounces. Measures 10 x 4.25 cms, height 5.25 cms. Marked on the cover with continental silver marks “K” and a shield with an arm holding an arrow. Continental. Circa 1880.

    A very fine quality pair of antique Viennese carved ivory figures, studded with gemstones, and mounted on enamelled silver pedestal bases. Each figure carries a silver and enamel wickerwork pannier and holds a silver basket filled with hardstone fruits. The man also holds a pearl and gemstone mounted silver walking stick. The enamelled silver bases are studded with large stones and mounted with dark blue hardstone tops. Height 23.5/21.5cm. Base 11.5 x 11cm. Silver marked with Austrian control marks.     A fine continental silver and rock crystal centrepiece representing the Birth of Venus. The silver has coloured enamel detail and the figural work is excellent. Fantastic large size and complete with the original leather carrying case. The central stem is modelled as a silver merman holding a rock crystal sphere containing an enamel seascape representing Venus emerging from a shell. The orb, with silver and enamel mounts, supports a merman blowing a horn. Height 33cm. Diameter of base 12.2cm. Probably Austrian. Late 19th century.

    A rare and excellent quality pair of novelty silver pepperettes modelled in the form of crouching frogs. The chased decoration is very fine, crisp and realistic. Bead eyes. The pepper pours from the pierced holes representing the frog’s nostrils and wind sac. The pepper is filled via a screw cover to the underside. Total weight 171 grams, 5.4 troy ounces. Length 6.7cm. Each piece is expertly modelled with coopered banding, perfectly fitting lids and bright gilding. The mustard pot has an integral blue glass liner. The base has a shaped band of embossed gadroon decoration and the feet are in the form of gush of water ejected from the dophin’s mouth. On top there is a fine quality cut glass bowl.     An antique silver model of a windmill mounted on a wine cup. Hand engraved. Beautifully constructed with multiple moving parts. The windmill house is reached by a staircase with two sculptured figures climbing up, on one side there is a man peeping out of a small window. The revolving windmill sails connect to the clock hands on the other side and both move together. The roof is mounted with a revolving flag, a tiny bird and a sculptured finial. There is a horn which is non-functional. Weight 203 grams, 6.5 troy ounces. Height 22.5 cm. Diameter of cup 8.5 cm. Fully stamped with Dutch silver marks fpr Amsterdam. Circa 1890.

The silver head, with large cut paste eyes surrounded by tuffs of feathers, is detachable and can be used as a drinking cup.     Of horse racing interest. A superb pair of large antique sterling silver presentation vases with covers. Each trophy has a tall vase shape on a pedestal foot and flying side handles. The embossed decoration is particularly fine with ribbons and swags of harebells, there is a band of acanthus leaves around the bottom. Each side there is a plaited ribbon cartouche containing, to the front, a coat of arms with crest and to the back, a presentation inscription. These vases, or chestnut urns, are very large and suitable to stand a bottle inside. Weight 1784 grams and 1705 grams, total 3489 grams, 112.1 troy ounces. Height 40 cms with lid, 29.2 cms without lid. Spread across the handles 23 cms. Stamped with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks on each vase and each lid for London 1896.     A large and substantial figure of a silver rider on horseback. Excellent quality and heavy gauge. Original gilt finish and jewelling to the clothing and horse harness. Natural stone base. The model is very intricate with many separate pieces assembled together. The head is removable. Weight 1180 grams, 37.9 troy ounces. This weight excludes the onyx base and the two silver hallmarked screw caps. It includes the weight of the two screws soldered to the bottom of the back hooves.
