A rare George II sterling silver basket of oval form with swing handle. Excellent weight and colour. The basket has a pierced body with a vine decorated cast silver border and it stands on four cast lions paw feet. At this time baskets were used mainly for bread and fruit. The swing handle features a finely modelled animals head to both sides just above the hinges. The centre has a large hand engraved cartouche enclosing an armorial and above is the motto “Luceat et Crescat”. Weight 1600 grams, 51.4 troy oz. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche, with matching armorial, to the front. Total weight of silver 1814 grams, 58.3 troy ounces. Castors height 18.5 and 16 cms. The silver bottle tops are unmarked, they are crested and the tops fit perfectly into the silver frame.
There is a hand engraved armorial on the 3 castors and cartouche of the frame and a crest on the top of the oli and vinegar bottles.

The detailed workmanship on these is quite exceptional and they sit very well in the hand. Each is hand engraved to the front with the crest of a lion over a crown. A magnificent example of English rococo silver. An antique sterling silver samovar of inverted baluster form with a folding raffia finish handle, the silver lid finial cast in the form of a little merman drinking from a shell, the curved spout finishing in the form of a bird. Superb quality deep chased decoration with shells, flowers and swirls. Hand engraved to the front is a large family armorial and to the reverse a Scottish sporran crest. The matching stand has an ornate cast and pierced frieze with face masks (to match those on the handle), and stands on large shell feet; the integral oil reservoir has a push on top, both with the sporran crest.
