Of horse racing interest. A superb pair of large antique sterling silver presentation vases with covers. Each trophy has a tall vase shape on a pedestal foot and flying side handles. The embossed decoration is particularly fine with ribbons and swags of harebells, there is a band of acanthus leaves around the bottom. Each side there is a plaited ribbon cartouche containing, to the front, a coat of arms with crest and to the back, a presentation inscription. These vases, or chestnut urns, are very large and suitable to stand a bottle inside. Weight 1784 grams and 1705 grams, total 3489 grams, 112.1 troy ounces. Height 40 cms with lid, 29.2 cms without lid. Spread across the handles 23 cms. Stamped with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks on each vase and each lid for London 1896. The model is very intricate with many separate pieces assembled together. The head is removable. Weight 1180 grams, 37.9 troy ounces. This weight excludes the onyx base and the two silver hallmarked screw caps. It includes the weight of the two screws soldered to the bottom of the back hooves.
