A decorative antique sterling silver wine jug of tall slender form. The crystal body is cut in the heavy quality Victorian hob nail design. The silver mount has grape vine detail entwined around the neck, the lid finial in the form of a bunch of grapes, the handle formed realistically as a branch with bark engraving and leaves. An antique silver model of a marriage cup modelled as a bearded gentleman with outstretched arms holding a cup that swivels. His richly decorated jacket and waistcoat sit over a long skirt which is the inverted drinking cup. Excellent quality and good weight. Parcel gilt. Weight 483 grams, 15.5 troy ounces. Height 31.5 cm. Stamped on the bottom of the skirt with German silver marks. Circa 1890.

An antique silver model of a windmill mounted on a wine cup. Hand engraved. Beautifully constructed with multiple moving parts. The windmill house is reached by a staircase with two sculptured figures climbing up, on one side there is a man peeping out of a small window. The revolving windmill sails connect to the clock hands on the other side and both move together. The roof is mounted with a revolving flag, a tiny bird and a sculptured finial. There is a horn which is non-functional. Weight 203 grams, 6.5 troy ounces. Height 22.5 cm. Diameter of cup 8.5 cm. Fully stamped with Dutch silver marks fpr Amsterdam. Circa 1890.

7471 Antique Silver and "Raeren" Stoneware Jug

An antique English amphora jug or vase in the manner of Jan Emens Mennicken, German, 1540–1593, the body with decorative armorial medallions dated 1588 and 1594, the 3 handles dated 1590. With a sterling silver foot and collar and a detachable silver lid. This jug was in the collection of Sir Charles Jackson, the author of the esteemed book on English silver hallmarks. Height 38 cms. Spread across handles 18 cms. Diameter of base 12 cms. Makers mark only – “IM” over a billet and pellet. The silver marks are recorded in Jacksons for 1594 however the vase is a later copy circa 1890 by Hubert Schiffer. Schiffer ran a small workshop in Raeren specialising in copies of renaissance originals. Examples of his work are rare and were often damaged on purpose to make them look ‘authentic’. There is a similar vase in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (see accompanying documentation).
Literature: Sir Charles Jackson: ‘An Illustrated History of English Plate’, published 1911, vol. II, page 781, figure 1015, where the author compares the makers mark to that on the communion flagon at Westwell.

The cup is hinged with long arms which swivels so that the top half rotates under which there is a second small cup. This can then be used as a traditional marriage cup.
