A delightful antique sterling silver mug with embossed decoration of children and putti. Fantastic quality, even the handle is in the form of a putti, and there are face masks around the base. To the front is an ornamental cartouche (uninscribed). Original interior gilding. No detail has been spared in the manufacture and the mug even has a double skin so that the embossed detail is hidden on the inside. Weight 341 grams, 10.9 troy ounces. Height 9.50 cms. A very rare and prestigious item. This magnificent gilt silver armada jug and stand was presented in honour of the Guildhall banquet for the Prince and Princess of Wales’s return from India. The tall jug, of vase shape form, has bands of classical motifs and ribbing, the centre with deep relief swags of ribbons and fruit with centre medallions. This superb decoration is repeated on the matching base which has a raised central dome decorated with the Prince of Wales feathers. The front of the basin has a large presentation inscription dated 1876. Weight – ewer 908 grams, basin 1258 grams, total 2166 grams, 69.6 troy ounces. Jug – height36cm, spread 14cm. A magnificent large antique sterling silver wine jug of elegant shaped form on pedestal foot. The hinged lid, with ornate flower finial, opens by squeezing the handle mechanism. Beautifully chased with flowers, swirls and leaves, the jug has a cartouche to both sides, one with an engraved crest and motto to the centre. To the front there is an applied leopards head and both sides of each cartouche there is a winged figure. Weight 1387 grams, 44.5 troy ounces. Tall height 38 cms. Diameter of foot 12.5 cms. An antique silver model of a windmill mounted on a wine cup. Hand engraved. Beautifully constructed with multiple moving parts. The windmill house is reached by a staircase with two sculptured figures climbing up, on one side there is a man peeping out of a small window. The revolving windmill sails connect to the clock hands on the other side and both move together. The roof is mounted with a revolving flag, a tiny bird and a sculptured finial. There is a horn which is non-functional. Weight 203 grams, 6.5 troy ounces. Height 22.5 cm. Diameter of cup 8.5 cm. Fully stamped with Dutch silver marks fpr Amsterdam. Circa 1890.

7471 Antique Silver and "Raeren" Stoneware Jug

An antique English amphora jug or vase in the manner of Jan Emens Mennicken, German, 1540–1593, the body with decorative armorial medallions dated 1588 and 1594, the 3 handles dated 1590. With a sterling silver foot and collar and a detachable silver lid. This jug was in the collection of Sir Charles Jackson, the author of the esteemed book on English silver hallmarks. Height 38 cms. Spread across handles 18 cms. Diameter of base 12 cms. Makers mark only – “IM” over a billet and pellet. The silver marks are recorded in Jacksons for 1594 however the vase is a later copy circa 1890 by Hubert Schiffer. Schiffer ran a small workshop in Raeren specialising in copies of renaissance originals. Examples of his work are rare and were often damaged on purpose to make them look ‘authentic’. There is a similar vase in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (see accompanying documentation).
