Plates & Platters

Antique Silver Dinner Plates and Meat Dishes. Dinner plates were usually made in dozens and larger quantities and often came as part of a suite of dishes including soup plates, oval serving plates and mazerines. These dishes very often came from grand houses and have finely executed coats of arms.

Chargers and Sideboard Dishes make an impressive show. They can be used as large serving dishes although some examples, with ornamental borders and centre panels, were probably just purely decorative.

A rare antique silver dish dating from Charles II period having the high relief embossing of animals, flowers and foliage, typical of the period. The quality of the decoration is excellent and the animals (lion, dog, stag and deer) are very charming. Weight 1172 grams, 31.1 troy ounces. Scratchweight 38=14. Diameter 41cm. London 1661. A fine example of early English silver having excellent patina and very clear hallmarks to the front of the plate. Of plain, circular shape the plate has a wide border with chased reeded edge. There are prick mark initials to both sides and a date of 1665. Weight 334 grams, 10.7 troy ounces. Diameter 24.25 cms. London 1664. Makers mark “H” in a heart.

A top quality antique silver strainer dish of oval form with a plain border. Excellent design and the quality you’d expect from this world famous English silversmith. Hand engraved to the centre with an armorial and the crest “Deo Regi Patria” for Duncombe impaling Campbell. The mazarine is designed to be used on top of an oval platter so that the decorative piercing would allow the juices to drain onto the platter below. It’s very rare to find an antique dish like this still complete with its original mazerine strainer. Hand engraved to one side of the platter and to the centre of the strainer with a hand engraved armorial. Marked number 17, this platter has come from a very large and important dinner service. An excellent pair of antique sterling silver serving dishes of shaped oval form with crisp gadroon borders. Engraved to the front there is a fine armorial, the motto reading “Finem respice” which means “look to the end”; we are told that these are the arms of John Bligh, the 3rd Earl of Darnley. Of staggered size, the medium platter nests perfectly inside the larger platter. Weight 2166 grams (69.6 troy ounces). The larger platter measures 44.5 x 31.5 cms.
