    9775 William III Silver Chamberstick

    A rare early English silver chamberstick (or “go to bed”) with the solid design and heavy gauge silver you’d expect from this date. It has the early form with flat teardrop handle. The circular pan has a gadrooned border and ribbed sconce, all mounted on three small stump feet. Hand engraved to one side is a crest and motto. The handle is hand engraved with a set of initials typical of the period. Weight 295 grams, 9.4 troy ounces. Height 6.2 cm. Diameter 11.5 cm. Spread 21.4 cm. London 1697. Makers mark unclear. Britannia standard silver.

    Outstanding quality and unusually large quart size. A rare early English silver flat top lidded tankard in Britannia standard silver with a scroll handle and decorative thumb piece. To the front is a large hand engraved armorial capped by the crest of a griffin. To the top of the handle there is a set of prick engraved owners initials. An excellent example of early hand beaten silver with lots of character.Contains 2500 ml, a hefty quart capacity (1 quart = 2 pints). Weight 1420 grams, 45.6 troy ounces.     An outstanding antique silver monteith bowl complete with the original detachable collar with castellated scroll border and cherub heads. Excellent size and proportions. The body decoration is typical for a monteith of the period 1690-1702 and has a series of asymmetrical tear shaped panels interspersed with unusual foliate “face” motifs; all on an intricately hand chased matted background. The lions mask side handles are beautifully modelled. Weight 1780 grams, 57.2 troy ounces. Height 21.4cm (with Monteith collar), 15.6cm (without collar). Diameter 27.5cm (collar), 26.2cm (bowl).     A 17th century silver cup and matching cover with original bright gilt interior. With ovolo borders and chased acanthus leaves. The lid has a small pine cone finial. Probably ecclesiastical, a pyx box. Weight 214 grams, 6.8 troy ounces. Height 12 cms, 16.5 cms to top of finial). Diameter 9.5 cms. The edge of the base has the cross key town mark for Rome, Italy. Also the ‘bee’ maker’s mark (see Bulgari Parte Prima, Vol 2, No 1124). Date 1687/1697.

The half flute decoration, popular from the reign of William and Mary, is accompanied by fish scale ornament and borders of hand engraving. Good size and weight. The quality and colour is excellent.     A rare antique solid silver chalice dating to circa 1700. Over 300 years old and in very good condition. Good original gilt finish. The decorative form is typical of German drinking cups of this period, the cup could also possibly be Italian. The shaped globular bowl and foot have embossed decoration with face masks and fruit, the top has a hand chased scroll border, and the centre column is mounted with 3 cast scrollwork ornaments with figureheads. Contains 200 ml. Weight 365 grams, 11.7 troy ounces. Height 20 cms. Diameter – top 6.5 cms, foot 9 cms. Marked on the edge of the foot rim with makers mark “PS” for Philipp Stenglin, town mark and assay scrape. Continental. Circa 1700.

    An early English silver punch bowl from the pre Queen Anne period. *Britannia standard silver. With charmingly quaint lions mask drop ring handles, the foot with a bold gadrooned border. The body decoration, typical for a monteith of the period 1690-1702, has a series of asymmetrical lobed panels intersected by spiral flutes of matted background which closely resemble cornunucopia. Around the body there is a hand engraved leaf and scroll decoration containing three exquisite quality vignettes of old testament bible scenes. The foot is decorated with a stamped bead and flower ornament. Contains 700 ml. Weight 187 grams, 6 troy ounces. Height 18 cm. Diameter of top 10.9 cm. Frankfurt, Germany c.1700. Maker Samuel Burckenholtz (see photo of text from Rosenberg), a documented maker of engraved beakers of this type.

Excellent quality and the heaviest type you’ll find at this date. Weight 237 grams, 7.6 troy ounces. Height 2.5 cms. Diameter 7 cms. Marked underneath but the stamps are so indistinct that only the Britannia standard mark can be made out. English. Circa 1700. This design is usually made by Huguenot silversmiths.

    9712 Antique German Silver Dish

    An interesting piece of early German silver with a tobacco smoking scene to the centre. Original gilt interior. The little dish, or wine taster, has scalloped borders and scrolled side handles. Embossed to the centre is the figure of a man in 17th century clothing and smoking a giant pipe; a brazier stands on the table to the left. The cartouche is formed from embossed dots and foliage in typical 17thcentury style. Weight 95 grams, 3 troy ounces. Width across handles 13.15cm. Height 3.1cm. Top 12.8cm. German silver hallmarks stamped around the edge for Augsburg circa 1700. Maker probably “IK” unidentified.

    A rare pair of tall antique silver candlesticks, the circular bases hand engraved with the Granville coat of arms within a foliate and scroll cartouche. Cast Britannia* standard silver. Total weight 1590 grams, 51.1 troy ounces. Height 22.1 cm. Base diameter 15 cm. The first candlestick is from the William III period, dated 1701 by Pierre Platel. The second candlestick is an exact copy made in the George II period, dated 1726 by David Willaume. Both highly respected Huguenot makers.

    A late-17th/early-18th century Danish silver peg tankard of plain cylindrical form raised on three stylish pomegranate ball feet. Large size and heavy weight. The domed cover is deeply embossed with a decorative border of foliate scrolls around a central hand engraved armorial dated 1701, the scroll handle has a thumb piece modelled as a rampant lion holding a large ball. Contains 2000ml. Weight 1443gms, 46.4 troy oz. Height 22.5cm (9ins). Diameter of top 15 cms (6 ins). Marked underneath with the initials “CK” for Christian Knudsen, Denmark, active 1698-1718.
