9775 William III Silver Chamberstick

A rare early English silver chamberstick (or “go to bed”) with the solid design and heavy gauge silver you’d expect from this date. It has the early form with flat teardrop handle. The circular pan has a gadrooned border and ribbed sconce, all mounted on three small stump feet. Hand engraved to one side is a crest and motto. The handle is hand engraved with a set of initials typical of the period. Weight 295 grams, 9.4 troy ounces. Height 6.2 cm. Diameter 11.5 cm. Spread 21.4 cm. London 1697. Makers mark unclear. Outstanding quality and unusually large quart size. A rare early English silver flat top lidded tankard in Britannia standard silver with a scroll handle and decorative thumb piece. To the front is a large hand engraved armorial capped by the crest of a griffin. To the top of the handle there is a set of prick engraved owners initials. An excellent example of early hand beaten silver with lots of character.Contains 2500 ml, a hefty quart capacity (1 quart = 2 pints). Weight 1420 grams, 45.6 troy ounces. An outstanding antique silver monteith bowl complete with the original detachable collar with castellated scroll border and cherub heads. Excellent size and proportions. The body decoration is typical for a monteith of the period 1690-1702 and has a series of asymmetrical tear shaped panels interspersed with unusual foliate “face” motifs; all on an intricately hand chased matted background. The lions mask side handles are beautifully modelled. Weight 1780 grams, 57.2 troy ounces. Height 21.4cm (with Monteith collar), 15.6cm (without collar). Diameter 27.5cm (collar), 26.2cm (bowl). A 17th century silver cup and matching cover with original bright gilt interior. With ovolo borders and chased acanthus leaves. The lid has a small pine cone finial. Probably ecclesiastical, a pyx box. Weight 214 grams, 6.8 troy ounces. Height 12 cms, 16.5 cms to top of finial). Diameter 9.5 cms. The edge of the base has the cross key town mark for Rome, Italy. The decorative form is typical of German drinking cups of this period, the cup could also possibly be Italian. The shaped globular bowl and foot have embossed decoration with face masks and fruit, the top has a hand chased scroll border, and the centre column is mounted with 3 cast scrollwork ornaments with figureheads. Contains 200 ml. Weight 365 grams, 11.7 troy ounces. Height 20 cms. Diameter – top 6.5 cms, foot 9 cms. The body decoration, typical for a monteith of the period 1690-1702, has a series of asymmetrical lobed panels intersected by spiral flutes of matted background which closely resemble cornunucopia. An interesting piece of early German silver with a tobacco smoking scene to the centre. Original gilt interior. The little dish, or wine taster, has scalloped borders and scrolled side handles. Embossed to the centre is the figure of a man in 17^th century clothing and smoking a giant pipe; a brazier stands on the table to the left. The cartouche is formed from embossed dots and foliage in typical 17^thcentury style. Weight 95 grams, 3 troy ounces. Width across handles 13.15cm. Height 3.1cm. Top 12.8cm.
