A rare early English silver monteith from the Queen Anne period. Large size. The decoration, with the ribbed body and decorative cartouches, is typical for this period. Particularly charming are the quaint lions mask side handles. The shaped monteith rim is fixed and was originally used to hold stem glasses, punch ladle and lemon squeezer. To the front and back there is a good hand engraved armorial for the Fitzgerald family. Underneath the bowl there is also a presentation inscription from the Fitzgerald family. Gilt interior. Very solid and heavy cast metal with knopped and baluster vase shaped stems and square hollowed out bases with canted corners. Each bears matching two crests and mottos (only traces), possibly marriage crests. One motto, although indistinct, reads ‘True To The End’. Excellent colour. This type of jug would have been used for serving wine, beer or other cold liquids. To the front is a contemporary hand engraved armorial within a decorative fish scale cartouche. The spout has a hinged cover with hand engraved initials “W over I*M”; these initials are repeated underneath the foot. The handle has the initial “A” over some indistinct initials, possibly “I*M”, which would indicate a marriage. Contains 1525 ml. Weight 1203 grams, 38.6 troy ounces. Height 29.5 cms. The cut corner square base has the typical style of the candlesticks of this period. The snuffer scissors, or wick trimmers, sit long ways in the stand.
