    6717 Pair of Georgian Silver Sauce Tureens with the Royal Windsor Coat of Arms

    An exceptionally fine pair of antique sterling silver sauce tureens of oval form on shaped claw feet. The quality and gauge of silver needs to be seen to be believed. Each tureen is decorated with broad shell and gadroon borders and the shell motif is repeated on the handles and feet. Engraved to both sides of each tureen there is a large hand engraved armorial and to each top there’s a double engraved crest. Motto “Je me fie en dieu”. These are the arms of the Windsor family, the royal house of Great Britain. Weight 2599 grams, 83.5 troy ounces. Height 15.5 cms. Spread 24 cms. Length 19 cms. Width 13.5 cms. The lids are numbered 2 and 3, so they are part of a larger set, London 1811. Maker Thomas Robins, known for his good quality dinner wares.

Hand engraved to the top and bottom rim there are two crests and mottos for the Marquis of Londonderry* and the Order of the Bath. The underside bears the pattern number 820. This handsome pair of ambassadorial silver plates were made by the celebrated London silversmith Paul Storr (1771-1844) for 1st Baron Charles William Stewart, later 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854), on his appointment as ambassador at Vienna on 27 August 1814.

    Literature. The antique silver pap boat was originally used as a shallow feeding dish for a child or invalid. These appeared circa 1710 and fell out of manufacture about 120 years later. With their smooth elegant shape, they make ideal servers for sauce.

The decorative lid handle is removable to use the lid as a serving dish. The double skinned base is a warming jacket and the handle unscrews to fill it with hot water.     An antique gilt silver bowl of large size and exceptionally heavy weight; this excellent quality is just as you’d expect from a master silversmith trained by the world famous Paul Storr. Raised on a pedestal foot and having hinged lions mask side handles, this oval wine cooler takes two bottles. The deep relief applied decoration is covered in grape and vine leaf ornament, the centre ovals have a Bacchanalian scene with cherubs, a goat and an impish Bacchus, to either side there is a large bird and dolphin.
