    A fine pair of antique silver serving dishes and covers on warming bases. Large size, excellent quality and good gauge silver. Elegant plain styling, with a broad band of ribbing and gadroon borders, and topped with a magnificent lion mounted handle. The warming bases are typical of the period and have discreet wooden pad feet and carrying handles. The covers both have a large coat of arms hand engraved to the front and an arm crest topped by a crown to the reverse side, the plates also have the matching crest. Silver weight 6,124 grams, 196 troy ounces. Total height 24cm. Silver dome on serving plate height 19cm. Diameter – dome 28cm, dish 31cm. Plates – sterling silver London 1774 by Thomas Heming. Domes – sterling silver London 1813/5 by Samuel Hennell. Old Sheffield plate warming stands circa 1774, unmarked.

    Outstanding quality and unusually large quart size. A rare early English silver flat top lidded tankard in Britannia standard silver with a scroll handle and decorative thumb piece. To the front is a large hand engraved armorial capped by the crest of a griffin. To the top of the handle there is a set of prick engraved owners initials. An excellent example of early hand beaten silver with lots of character.Contains 2500 ml, a hefty quart capacity (1 quart = 2 pints). Weight 1420 grams, 45.6 troy ounces.     Large size and very impressive. A rare antique silver salver, of unusual square waisted form with gadroon borders and shell corners. Heavy gauge silver. The outside centre has a traditional shell and foliate engraved theme with shells and a crest to each corner. Engraved to the centre is a marriage coat of arms with an “escutcheon of pretence”, and the motto “Laudabunt Alii Rhodon” circa 1790. The engraved mantling, of an unfurling ruffle of cloth, is very striking and contemporary to the arms. Weight 2190 grams, 70.4 troy ounces. Height 4.5cm. Width 40cm. London 1755.     9855 17th Century Continental Silver Pomander

    A fascinating piece of history contained in a small silver globe. This antique silver pomander of spherical form has all-over chased decoration of flowers & leaf-scrolls in low relief. The screw top unturns to release the six numbered, hinged segments with sliding covers, the interior with hand engraved flowers. The foot unscrews to reveal a secret hollow compartment. Weight 89 grams, 2.8 troy ounces. Height 6.5cm. Spread 9cm fully extended. The pomander is made of unmarked silver It is quite usual for a small article of this date to be unmarked. Probably Dutch. Circa 1680.

    9853 Elizabeth I Silver Chalice

    A rare early English chalice dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. A very early date and in very good condition. With straight tapering sides, slightly flared at the top, and would originally have had a cover (paten). Hand beaten finish as you’d expect at this date. The single hatched band of decoration is well executed and the definition is very good. Around the top rim are 3 engraved marks and one of these has the date “1600”. The foot wire has stamped ornament of tongue and dart, typical of the period, and applied wire ornament to the stem. Contains 380 ml. Weight of chalice 292 grams, 9.3 troy ounces. Chalice dimensions – height 18.2cm, diameter of top 9.8cm. Extremely good silver marks for London 1569. Maker “HS” is possibly the Henry Sutton listed in Jackson’s Gold & Silver Marks as a known maker of communion cups. Sterling silver.

    Literature. The antique silver pap boat was originally used as a shallow feeding dish for a child or invalid. These appeared circa 1710 and fell out of manufacture about 120 years later. With their smooth elegant shape, they make ideal servers for sauce.

    A magnificent large antique sterling silver wine jug in the traditional form of an Armada jug. Very elegant design on a pedestal foot. Suitable for both hot and cold drinks. The hinged lid, with ornate flower and scroll finial, opens by squeezing the handle mechanism. Beautifully chased with flowers, scrolls and leaves, the jug has a cartouche to both sides (uninscribed).
