An attractive pair of antique opera glasses made of gilt brass metal and enamel. The binocular tops and extension knob are made of real mother of pearl. The scarlet red enamel barrels each have a large hand painted portrait of a young woman, the flower head and foliate edged cartouche is painted in gilt and silver leaf. Measures – width 10cm, closed height 4.9cm, extended height 6cm. French. Circa 1890. Retailer’s mark for Chevalier, Paris.

An unusual antique silver tea caddy box of curved rectangular form. Lovely classic style. This is a double caddy designed for both black and green tea. Beautifully engraved to the lid and body with leaf borders and a thick band of foliate scrolls with interspersed flowerheads. To the front is a monogram in old fashioned script. The fixed carrying handle has a reed and acanthus decoration. The unusual double opening lid has an inset hinge and there is a lock to either side. Key provided. Weight 661 grams, 21.2 troy ounces. A fine pair of antique silver serving dishes and covers on warming bases. Large size, excellent quality and good gauge silver. Elegant plain styling, with a broad band of ribbing and gadroon borders, and topped with a magnificent lion mounted handle. The warming bases are typical of the period and have discreet wooden pad feet and carrying handles. The covers both have a large coat of arms hand engraved to the front and an arm crest topped by a crown to the reverse side, the plates also have the matching crest. A fascinating piece of history contained in a small silver globe. This antique silver pomander of spherical form has all-over chased decoration of flowers & leaf-scrolls in low relief. The screw top unturns to release the six numbered, hinged segments with sliding covers, the interior with hand engraved flowers. The foot unscrews to reveal a secret hollow compartment. Weight 89 grams, 2.8 troy ounces. Height 6.5cm. Spread 9cm fully extended. The pomander is made of unmarked silver It is quite usual for a small article of this date to be unmarked. Probably Dutch. Circa 1680.

A rare early English chalice dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. A very early date and in very good condition. With straight tapering sides, slightly flared at the top, and would originally have had a cover (paten). Hand beaten finish as you’d expect at this date. The single hatched band of decoration is well executed and the definition is very good. Around the top rim are 3 engraved marks and one of these has the date “1600”. The foot wire has stamped ornament of tongue and dart, typical of the period, and applied wire ornament to the stem. Contains 380 ml. Weight of chalice 292 grams, 9.3 troy ounces. Chalice dimensions – height 18.2cm, diameter of top 9.8cm. Extremely good silver marks for London 1569. Maker “HS” is possibly the Henry Sutton listed in Jackson’s Gold & Silver Marks as a known maker of communion cups. Sterling silver.

Literature. The antique silver pap boat was originally used as a shallow feeding dish for a child or invalid. These appeared circa 1710 and fell out of manufacture about 120 years later. With their smooth elegant shape, they make ideal servers for sauce.
