9918 Elizabeth I Silver Chalice

A rare early English chalice dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. A very early date and in very good condition. With straight tapering sides, slightly flared at the top, and would originally have had a cover (paten). Hand beaten finish as you’d expect at this date. The single hatched band of decoration is well executed and the definition is very good. There is applied wire ornament to the stem, the foot has a second band of hatched engraving. Contains 180 ml. Weight of chalice 190 grams, 6.1 troy ounces. Chalice dimensions – height 15.3cm, diameter of top 7.7cm. Extremely good silver marks for London 1571. Maker probably James Feake. Sterling silver.

An outstanding quality antique silver coffee pot of gourd form, the body depicting Dutch tavern scenes after David Teniers, deeply chased in relief. Made by Edward Farrell, one of the most innovative silversmiths of the day. The fabulous spout, in the form of a dragon with outstretched wings, is very rare and unrecorded. The drunken revellers are drinking, playing music and dancing in the company of serving wenches, dogs and a caged bird. The lid finial depicts a man reclining with his dog, drinking and smoking a long pipe. This very heavy pot weighs 1394 grams, 44.8 troy ounces. Height 25.5cm. Spread 22.5cm. London 1818. It’s very rare to find a chamberstick complete with the original snuffer scissors, let alone a matching pair! These elegant antique silver chambersticks have plain classic styling, bead borders and a plain C scroll handle with a thumb piece. To the front of the pan is a hand engraved armorial crest. The candle nozzle is detachable and the snuffer has a little side handle. The snuffer scissors, also known as a wick trimmer, are part made of silver, and part iron.
