A rare item of English provincial silver from Hull in the North of England. An antique silver tumbler cup of simple plain design. Good gauge silver and excellent patina. The round and weighted base allows the cup to stay upright when knocked from side to side. This example, typical of Hull silver tumblers, has a flatter base than those made in London. To the front is a hand engraved armorial with a badger crest for the Brooke family. To the reverse are owner’s initials “AD to IS”. Contains 170 ml. Weight 116 grams, 3.7 troy ounces. Height 5.4cm. A rare 16^th century silver chalice with paten. The cup follows the standard design for Elizabethan communion cups with straight tapering sides, very slightly flared at the top, on a spreading foot. Decorated with broad bands of hatched engraving around the centre and top rim, and ornamental wires to the stem and foot. The cover has a matching decoration and a date of 1567. This cup is of excellent quality and weighs heavy in the hand. Contains 240 ml. Weight of chalice and paten 338 grams, 10.8 troy ounces. Chalice dimensions – height 16.1cm, diameter of top 9.9cm, foot 8.7cm. Unmarked silver. English probably provincial. Circa 1567.

A rare early English silver chalice dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. This cup follows the standard design for Elizabethan communion cups and is most likely to have been made from pre-reformation silver. Of very plain form, the straight tapering sided bowl has a circular band below the rim, and simple reeded wire ornamentation has been applied to the stem and foot. A rare early English silver monteith from the Queen Anne period. Large size. The decoration, with the ribbed body and decorative cartouches, is typical for this period. Particularly charming are the quaint lions mask side handles. The shaped monteith rim is fixed and was originally used to hold stem glasses, punch ladle and lemon squeezer. To the front and back there is a good hand engraved armorial for the Fitzgerald family. Underneath the bowl there is also a presentation inscription from the Fitzgerald family. Gilt interior. This large sized serving dish with matching cover is of oval bellied form with applied decorative mounts, heavy cast silver side handles and feet, and a lid finial in the form of an eagle. The Turk’s head masks displayed to both sides of the lid are an interesting feature. With a hand engraved crest (for the Armistead family) to the front of the body and the lid. Good colour. An antique sterling silver samovar of inverted baluster form with a folding raffia finish handle, the silver lid finial cast in the form of a little merman drinking from a shell, the curved spout finishing in the form of a bird. Superb quality deep chased decoration with shells, flowers and swirls. Hand engraved to the front is a large family armorial and to the reverse a Scottish sporran crest. The matching stand has an ornate cast and pierced frieze with face masks (to match those on the handle), and stands on large shell feet; the integral oil reservoir has a push on top, both with the sporran crest.
