    An early English antique sterling silver beaker of plain design with simple foot wires. Around the top there is a band of hatched foliate decoration; this was used from the Elizabethan period until this time but with gradually less detail. Scratch weight underneath. Contains 325 ml.     A rare early English sterling silver cup of simple plain design. An excellent example. The round and weighted base allows the cup to stay upright when knocked from side to side. Good gauge silver and patina. It is interesting to see the early workmanship – the original hammered finish on the inside surface and the reinforced and weighted base. Contains 150 ml.     8145 Antique Silver Travelling Lamp

    Sold

    A fine quality antique sterling silver travelling or carriage lamp by Orton & Houle, neatly designed so that it can be carried for travel. To use the lamp, lift the lid and pull out the hinged front cover to reveal the candle holder behind a glass panel. The lamp can then either be hung from the suspension hooks, or placed standing up by pulling down the base. Next to the base there is a cylindrical vesta case, with a drop down hinged cover for matches and a match striker. A nice feature is the candle holder which has a spring fitting allowing the candle to be pushed up as the candle burns down. Stamped on the main cover with full English silver hallmarks for London 1863. Maker and retailer Ortner & Houle, 3 St James St, SW London.

    A fine antique sterling silver serving dish and cover with a turned wood carrying handle and central divider. Excellent quality and good gauge silver as you’d expect from this world famous English silversmith. Elegant plain styling with shaped shell and scroll borders. The lid has a magnificent hand engraved armorial within a scroll cartouche and the base and central divider ring bear a double crest. The decorative lid handle is removable to use the lid as a serving dish. The double skinned base is a warming jacket and the handle unscrews to fill it with hot water.     An excellent pair of antique sterling silver serving dishes of shaped oval form with crisp gadroon borders. Engraved to the front there is a fine armorial, the motto reading “Finem respice” which means “look to the end”; we are told that these are the arms of John Bligh, the 3rd Earl of Darnley. Of staggered size, the medium platter nests perfectly inside the larger platter. Weight 2166 grams (69.6 troy ounces). The larger platter measures 44.5 x 31.5 cms. The medium platter measures 39 x 26.5 cms. London 1770. Maker Parker & Wakelin.

    A rare early English toy two-handled wine taster in sterling silver from the reign of Charles II. With a simple plain form and wirework handles. This little cup has an excellent patina and hammered finish. Contains 10 ml approx. Weight 12 grams. Height 2 cms. Diameter of top 4.5 cms. Spread across handles 6.7 cms. Marked underneath with the makers mark only “WH conjoined, mullet below”. Mark entered 1670 (see Jacksons page 130*).

    An antique sterling silver bullet shape teapot. Lovely plain shape with a straight spout and hand engraved decoration to the upper body and lid. Excellent quality and many fine features. The lid detail is particularly charming with the fan motifs blending into the little face masks on the upper body. The bullet shaped teapot is probably one of the best known types of the George II period and the lid of this one has a cleverly concealed flush hinge which is difficult to distinguish as the engraver has continued the decoration over this area. Contains 450 ml. Weight 384 grams, 12.3 troy ounces. Height 10.5 cms. Spread 20.25cms. Diameter of base 7 cms. Made in London (no date letter). Two marks for the maker Francis Spilsbury I (this is his first mark used 1729-1738). See condition report regarding the silver marks.
