    8014 Antique James I Silver Chalice

    A rare early English sterling silver chalice dating to the reign of James I. Over 400 years old and in very good condition. Plain form with a flared top and shaped pedestal foot. The outside of the bowl has a broad hand engraved design with scrolls and leaves. The pedestal foot is engraved with the much used “hit and miss” decoration which consists of parallel lines of spaced dashes. Uninscribed. Excellent colour. Charming hand beaten finish as you’d expect from this period. Contains 300 ml. Weight 198 grams, 6.3 troy ounces. Height 17.5 cms. Diameter – top 7.25 cms, foot 8 cms. Extremely good silver marks for London 1617. Makers mark “IV” – see Jacksons page 107, (*it’s very rare for marks of this period to have a name associated with it). There would originally have been a cover (paten).

Sterling silver. Stamped on top with the Dublin mark, Hibernia and makers mark for John Laughlin. Circa 1750.

    A handsome antique sterling silver sauce tureen in the Adam style. Classic boat shape with bead borders, tall sweeping reed handles and a simple urn finial. To the front of the body there is a fine hand engraved armorial with the motto “Beware in Time” topped (on the lid) by a crest of a heron devouring a salmon, probably the arms of the Lumisden family, Innergelly, Scotland.     A handsome antique sterling silver soup tureen in the Adam style. Classic boat shape with gadroon borders, half fluting and an imposing crown finial. To both sides there is a fine hand engraved armorial topped by a large crown (same as the lid finial). To the lid there is a hand engraved double lion crest, also topped by the family crown. The motto ‘Fama Semper Vivet’ means ‘May His Fame last Forever’. Weight 2680 grams, 86 troy ounces. Height 26 cms. Spread across the handles 44 cms. Width 33.5 cms. Depth 21 cms. London 1791. Maker James Young whose work is described by Grimwade as being of elegant neoclassical design and fine finish.

    A rare and delightful antique scent bottle with a decorative gold mount. Excellent quality. In the original fitted box. The beautiful gold mounted top has a hand engraved design with a classical Greek key border and scroll work additions, inside the hinged top there is a small glass stopper. The oval shaped body is made of multi faceted rock crystal and typically of the period, has a rounded base which was made to lie down. Bottle height 10 cms. Width 4.25 cms. Stamped on the mount with a small Dutch gold mark, circa 1860.

    A magnificent large antique sterling silver wine jug of elegant shaped form on pedestal foot. The hinged lid, with ornate flower encrusted finial, opens by squeezing the handle mechanism. Beautifully chased with flowers, swirls and leaves, the jug has a cartouche to both sides (uninscribed).
