A delightful antique silver box in super crisp condition. The top is decorated in the traditional silver and black niello with two ladies listening to a young man playing a mandolin and, in the background, on gilt stippled ground with leaf borders. The base is equally beautiful with a lady playing the harpsichord, the listener sitting in an armchair. The interior has the original gilding. Weight 55 grams, 1.7 troy ounces. Top measures 6.25 x 4.5 cms. Height 1.4 cms. Top and bottom marked with Russian silver marks. Makers mark for Ivan Kaltykov, Moskow. Dated 1827.

A superb antique sterling silver wine jug with a shaped vase form on spreading pedestal foot. Fantastic quality from top to toe, just as you’d expect from this prestigious English master silversmith. With a cast decorative top finial, thick knotted handle, large applied vine leaves to the lower body and a heavy cast silver foot. Wrapped around the body are 2 bands of ornate gilt silver vine leaves and a curious feature is the lower band, which covers the silver hallmarks, but can be detached by unscrewing the central vine leaf. The inner lid and inside the jug also have the original gilt finish. Contains 1200 ml. Weight 969 grams, 31.1 troy ounces. Height 29 cms. Spread 18 cms. London 1829. Maker Paul Storr.

An extremely rare early English chalice dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. It is quite remarkable to find a piece of silver of such an early date and especially in such good condition. This cup follows the standard design for Elizabethan communion cups and is most likely to have been made from pre-reformation silver. It has a flared top and would originally have had a cover (paten). The engraved arabesques to the body are typical for the period. The foot wire has stamped ornament of tongue and dart. Charming hand beaten finish as you’d expect at this date. Weight 231 grams, 7.4 troy ounces. Height 18.5 cms. Diameter – top 9 cms, foot 7.75 cms. Extremely good silver marks for London 1569. The makers mark letter “A” was entered in 1564/5 (Jacksons page 96). It’s very rare for marks of this period to have a name associated with it*.
