The earliest form of silver flagon used for serving wine, beer and other cold drinks dates from the late 16th century, and the handsome baluster beer jugs followed shortly after in circa 1720. Silver wine jugs with hinged lids were introduced in the late 18th century.

In the 19th century the silver claret jug became popular with its handsome crystal body through which the deep red coloured wine could be admired.

In the late 1800s stylish crystal decanters with silver mounts became popular, sometimes two or three decanters would be fitted into a handsome wooden or silver tantalus holder and complete drinks sets would incorporate a tray, jug and matching goblets.

    A good early date. An antique silver wine jug of octagonal form on a shaped detachable foot. Decorated with matted background between plain gilded bands (gilding worn). Good gauge silver. Gilt interior. Engraved to the front “Signum Fidei”. The hinged cover has a later English coat of arms (probably Weldon of Swanscombe, Kent). Weight 681 grams, 21.8 troy ounces. Height 20.5 cm.     An excellent antique silver covered jug of plain form with a cast and applied foot and handle. Britannia standard silver*. Very heavy quality. This type of jug would have been used for serving wine, beer or other cold liquids. To the front is a contemporary hand engraved armorial within a decorative fish scale cartouche. The spout has a hinged cover with hand engraved initials “W over I*M”; these initials are repeated underneath the foot. The handle has the initial “A” over some indistinct initials, possibly “I*M”, which would indicate a marriage. Contains 1525 ml. Weight 1203 grams, 38.6 troy ounces. Height 29.5 cms. Fantastic quality from top to toe, just as you’d expect from this prestigious English master silversmith. With a cast decorative top finial, thick knotted handle, large applied vine leaves to the lower body and a heavy cast silver foot. Wrapped around the body are 2 bands of ornate gilt silver vine leaves and a curious feature is the lower band, which covers the silver hallmarks, but can be detached by unscrewing the central vine leaf.     A very rare and prestigious item. This magnificent gilt silver armada jug and stand was presented in honour of the Guildhall banquet for the Prince and Princess of Wales’s return from India. The tall jug, of vase shape form, has bands of classical motifs and ribbing, the centre with deep relief swags of ribbons and fruit with centre medallions. This superb decoration is repeated on the matching base which has a raised central dome decorated with the Prince of Wales feathers. The front of the basin has a large presentation inscription dated 1876. Weight – ewer 908 grams, basin 1258 grams, total 2166 grams, 69.6 troy ounces. Jug – height36cm, spread 14cm.
